Internship

In brief

The internship is an important instrument for students and graduates to acquire working-oriented skills and become more aware of their professional choices. Students enrolled in the MSc in Telecommunications Engineering have the opportunity to make an internship experience as a part of their career, earning up to 6 ECTS credits.

The University of Cassino and Southern Lazio (UNICAS) promotes an internship program in collaboration with partner companies and institutions, by covering insurance expenses and providing scientific support. The program is open to students and to fresh graduates (within one year of graduation). Specific agreements with more than 2000 companies and institutions are already active. Applicants are responsible to individually contact the company/institution and define a training project to be completed in collaboration with the university advisor. If the company/institution does not have an ongoing agreement, the applicant must ensure that a Training Agreement is stipulated by the parties before the beginning of the activities.

The University of Cassino and Southern Lazio is member of SOUL (Sistema Orientamento Università Lavoro), a consortium of universities and public institutions in the Lazio region, which offers services for internships, job placement, and career guidance to students and graduates in collaboration with partner companies and industries.

Detailed information can be found here. A short summary follows.

What is the internship?

The internship is a training period in the company that offers the student the opportunity for a first approach to the world of work in view of future employment choices. Furthermore, the internship activity allows the student to acquire, according to his own training activity plan (PAF), university training credits (CFU) thanks to which to reach the qualification and a "business" professionalism that can be appropriately spent on job market.

To access internships it is necessary to have obtained at least 120 CFU on the first level degree and at least 50 on the second level degree.

Furthermore, the internship must be carried out in the year of the course indicated in the student's educational activities plan.

The duration of the internship is determined by the commitment necessary to obtain the credits required by the individual courses of study. The hours foreseen for the internship must be carried out in the period between the start date and the end date of the internship. There is no minimum number of hours to be carried out daily at the host structure while the maximum limit is 8 hours. The internship does not in any way constitute an employment relationship and therefore does not bind companies to any obligation to recruit during or at the end of the internship.

Where is it possible to carry out the internship?

It can be carried out both at companies / organizations that have an agreement with the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio, and at the research laboratories of the Engineering Area. If a company with which to carry out the internship does not have an agreement, it is necessary that it stipulates an agreement with the University. The agreement is a contractual document relating to the requirements and obligations for carrying out internships by students at the host organizations, whose duration is annual with automatic renewal unless canceled.

The internship agreement must be stipulated according to the specific forms available at the link above indicated.

The host organization must sign two copies of the agreement form and fill in the personal data sheet to be returned to the Internship Office. They include personal data sheet host company and personal data sheet host institution,.

The agreement of a new structure is managed by the Internship Office of the Engineering teaching area and must be completed before the internship activities begin. Precise legal provisions determine the numerical limit of interns who can be hosted simultaneously in training and orientation internships

The choice of the structure where to carry out the internship can take place:

The University guarantees insurance coverage for trainees at the affiliated structures against accidents at work that they may suffer during the internship, as well as with civil liability insurance for damage that they may involuntarily cause to third parties (people / things) during the course. carrying out the aforementioned activities with insurance companies operating in the sector.

Early termination of the internship.

In the event of early termination of the internship activities with respect to the date indicated on the training project, the host structure is required to communicate this to the Internship Office of the Didactic Area, using the appropriate form requesting early termination of the internship

What to do at the end of the internship?

Before leaving the host structure, the student must obtain the certificate of the end of the internship which will indicate the internship data, the activities carried out and a summary assessment by the company tutor. The student must also complete and take charge of having the following questionnaires completed: student questionnaire for the host company / institution  questionnaire for the academic tutor.

The university tutor will certify with a special examination report the suitability and therefore the achievement by the student of the credits required for the internship activities. This report must be sent to the Didactic Secretariat together with the certificate of completion of the internship and the completed and signed questionnaires. The Didactic Secretariat will register the CFU only with complete documentation.
